Man burnt to death for impregnating mother, daughter

NSUKKA — The university town of Nsukka in Enugu State has witnessed yet another brutal death as a tipper driver who allegedly impregnated a widow and her daughter has reportedly been burnt to death by son of the widow, Sunday Ugwoke. 

The tipper driver, Sylvester Ezema, attached to  Ferguson Nig. Limited hailed from Akpa Edem, Nsukka Local Government  Area, Enugu State and shared a common fence boundary with his widowed lover, Mrs. Ugwoke. Report said he had been having amorous dealings with the woman’s daughter too unknown to the widow before he died  a few days ago.

 According to report, Sylvester was allegedly burnt to death by Sunday, who had warned him to leave his mother alone and stop making love with her in his late father’s bedroom, which is adjacent to his room, a warning the  deceased allegedly turned down and continue with his amorous act. 

Sylvester defied all the warnings by Sunday, saying the widow was a family friend and as such nobody would  suspect them. Having defied his warning, Sunday, armed with grinded pepper and petrol ambushed the lover boy. As Sylvester stepped out of the house, Sunday poured the  powder pepper and petrol on Sylvester and  set him ablaze.

African China turns hairdresser

Nothing much has been heard from talented music artiste, Chinagorom Onuoha aka African China in a while. The singer, famed for phenomenal tracks such as ‘Mr President’ ‘If You Love Somebody,’ and ‘Crisis’ went under the radar after he was embroiled in a rape scandal in the United Kingdom about 10 years ago. Though he has released some songs after that ugly incident, they did not record the kind of success his first tracks attracted. The Ajegunle-born singer has however decided to tow a different path business-wise. He is now the proprietor of a hair salon known as Chyna Town Unisex Beauty Salon, which is located at Festac, Lagos.We can only hope he hasn’t finally given up on his music career.

Man kills and buries his father in shallow grave in Anambra state

The man pictured left allegedly killed and buried his own father in Umuajana Village Umudioka, Dunukofia LGA of Anambra state.
The old man had gone missing for some days and his family had started looking for him. The shallow grave where the son buried him was discovered on Sunday March 6th, around 2pm after someone raised suspicion. The son was handed over to the police for further investigation.

OMG!!Woman Arrested after ‘BITING OFF Boyfriend’s Tongue during Passionate Kiss’

A woman has been arrested after allegedly biting off her boyfriend’s tongue during a passionate kiss.

Shakeia Long, 37, was sharing a snog with Dwayne Williams, 41, when she chomped down and removed a chunk of his tongue, it was reported.

Horrified Williams managed to grab the piece of flesh and fled Long’s apartment, in Hartford,
Connecticut, the Hartford Courant reported.

He is believed to have flagged down a passing police officer and was taken to hospital, according to an arrest warrant seen by the local paper.

Williams struggled to speak but was able to tell the officer “She bit off my tongue”, the warrant says.

Williams was taken to nearby St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center where the detached piece of tongue was placed on ice.

Williams told investigators he had lost a lot of blood and began losing consciousness, the warrant alleges.

Medics tried in vain to reattach the large chunk of tongue, the Courant reports.

Hartford police spoke to Williams after his release from the hospital and tried to track down his alleged attacker.

Long, who has a child with Williams, was quizzed by officers and admitted she had smoked PCP with Williams at the time, authorities said.

In her statement, she claims she “was not aware of his injuries or how they occurred”.

Long was charged with first-degree assault and appeared in court this week .

She also faces a charge of violating the terms of her probation from a 2013 second-degree assault conviction.

Long is due back in court March 31.

Mind-boggling! Woman Gives Birth to Her 14th Child From 14 Different Fathers (Photos)

A woman has set an unbelievable, new record for having the most number children who were all fathered by different men.

Anita Sullivan, a 36-year old woman from Michigan has made a crashing entrance into the Guinness Book of World Records Wednesday at the Harper University Hospital, by giving birth to her 14th child, all born from different fathers.

According to the internationally recognized authority on the cataloguing and verification of world records, Anita Sullivan has just become the first woman in recorded history to conceive children with more than thirteen different men.

Acknowledging her feat, the woman said: “I’m extremely proud to have broken a World Record. My mother always told me that I was lazy and worthless, and that I would never accomplish anything in my life.

“Now, I’ve shown everyone that she was wrong, and that I can even be the best in the world when I put my mind to something. In fact, I’ve just accomplished something that no one had done before!”

Anita Sullivan says she’s been unlucky with relationships in the past, but she believes that this time she may have found the man of her life.

After their meeting with Ms. Sullivan, the representatives of Guinness opened a second investigation concerning the record for the number of child support pensions received by one person.

The Detroit native is already the beneficiary of pensions paid by 11 different men, and is implicated in two other custody cases, which should proceed before the family court over the next two months.

The investigation should be over by the month of March 2016, and Guinness will then be able to tell if Ms. Sullivan holds a second World Record or not.

Ex-President Jonathan’s kidnapped nephew found dead in Otuoke creeks

The dead body of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s nephew was found floating along a creek in Otuoke yesterday, according to witnesses. The deceased, Mr. Samuel Oki, was 35 years old and was abducted along with Mr. Jonathan’s foster father Inegite Jonathan on Wednesday.

Armed gunmen, suspected to be kidnappers, abducted the 72-year-old Inegite Jonathan on Wednesday, but the kidnapping of Mr. Oki was not noticed until several hours later. The discovery of Mr. Oki’s decomposing body by Otuoke community members has increased fears for the safety of the 72-year-old victim whose location is still unknown. 

The villagers who were seen discussing the sad incident speculated that the young man tried to resist the kidnappers. Some said that they heard a gunshot on Wednesday, as the kidnappers were believed to be fleeing through the waterways. According to them, divers and local fisherman had recovered the body and anchored it by the riverside to prevent the body from being carried away by water currents. The body has been deposited at a morgue in the area. 

The kidnappers have yet to establish contact with the family of their hostage since Wednesday’s abduction. This is the second time Mr. Inegite Jonathan has been kidnapped. On February 28th, 2014 he was kidnapped and later freed by security forces on March 10th, 2014. 

One local resident described the 2014 experience as “traumatic” and that Mr. Jonathan had been beaten and kicked by his abductors. Asinim Butswat, the Bayelsa State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident and said that the police were trailing the kidnappers. “On the 17 February, 2016, at about 3:30am, seven unknown gunmen abducted one Inengite Nitabai at his residence in Otuoke, Ogbia Local Government Area. “A massive manhunt has been launched by a combined team of Marine Police and Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Command, to rescue the victim and arrest the abductors. 

The investigation is ongoing,” Mr. Butswat said Nancy Dickson, 26, the younger sister to Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson, was abducted in December 2015 and has been held captive for more than fifty days. The Governor had, in his first term in office, signed the anti-kidnapping law that prescribes a death sentence for kidnapping. Despite this there have been no convictions and kidnappings continue to thrive in the State.

OH No! Pastor Rapes Teenager, Blames It On The Devil.

The General Overseer of Agape Baptist Church, Pastor Oprite Amakiri, has been arrested and detained at the Rumuolumeni Police Division in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The 50-year-old randy pastor confessed to how he deceived a member of his church and raped her 18-year-old sister before he was exposed and dragged to the police.

Amakiri was said to have told about 200 members of his church that he had been battling waste pain for the past two years and stressed that God told him that a girl between the age of 12 and 18 years old would be needed to massage his waste for him to be healed.

However, the gullible members of the church did not see anything wrong in the randy pastor’s ‘prophecy’ and one of them, the elder sister to the victim (names withheld) decided to make available her 18-year-old sister for the massage job.

The pastor (Amakiri) decided to visit the home of his victim’s sister to get massaged while the owner of the house (victim’s sister), who is a roadside trader, had gone to do her petty trading.
It was learnt that the pastor raped the girl on three occasions and threatened to deal with her if she dared expose his deeds to anyone, including her elder sister.

Not satisfied with the development, the victim (names withheld) slammed the door against the pastor on the fourth day and stopped him from gaining access into the room for another round of sex.
Angered by the girl’s effrontery, the randy pastor put a call across to the elder sister of the victim and told her that the 18-year-old girl was trying to stop ‘God’s prophecy’, an action that forced the naïve victim’s sister to abandon her wares and rushed home with dissatisfaction.

On getting to her house, the rape victim told her sister how she had been defiled on four occasions by the pastor. It was at that point that the trader raised the alarm and Pastor Amakiri was arrested.
Speaking with newsmen, the errant pastor confessed to the crime and said nobody should blame it on the devil and that he (Amakiri) should take the blame because he actually planned and executed the rape of the teenager.

“The elder sister to the girl I raped is a choir member of my church. It was after choir practice one Thursday that I informed the sister that I would like to visit her house for a serious discussion and she obliged me.

“The following day, I paid her the visit and requested that she allow her younger sister (his victim), to massage my waist, that I had been having ache on it in the past two years and every treatment, drugs and injection had failed.

“She then went and discussed with the younger sister, who accepted to help me. So, we had the first massage treatment that day while the elder sister was around and nothing happened between me and the little girl.

“On Saturday, I called her to inform her that I was coming back for the treatment, I got there while she was about to leave for choir practice in the church. While the massage was going on, I had the (sexual) urge. So, I had carnal knowledge of the girl. I have successfully raped her three times,” Amakiri, whose church is located in Rumuolumeni, added.

The cleric, whose wife is a health worker in Degem Locl Government Area of the state, explained that he could not tell his wife to massage him because she only came home from her work place once a week when she was off duty.

Amakiri, who has four children, stated that it was during his fourth attempt at raping the girl that he met a brick wall and since then, he had not regained his freedom.

He said, “It was the fourth time that she (victim) locked the gates against me. So, I had to call her sister on her cell phone and she rushed to the house from her shop and began to interrogate the girl on why she did not want to massage my waist again and she disclosed what has been happening between us.
“I sincerely regret my actions. It is like the ground should open up and swallow me. Don’t blame the devil for what has happened, blame me because I was tempted and I did it,” he added.

The victim, who simply gave her name as Goodness, told newsmen that she never knew the pastor that was respected so much by members of his church could think of having sexual intercourse with her.
She said the pastor had warned her on each occasion he forcefully had carnal knowledge of her not to disclose what happened to anybody, including her elder sister.

“I was in the house when the pastor came and asked me to massage his waist. On the first day, I massaged him, nothing happened between us. But on the second day, while I was massaging him, he began to touch my breast and raped me.

“I tried to escape, but he held me and warned me never to tell anybody what he did to me. He has raped me three times,” the victim said, adding that she used vegetable oil to massage the pastor’s waist.

Speaking on the matter, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ahmad Mohammad, said the randy pastor had confessed to raping the girl on several occasions, adding that Amakiri would be charged to court at the end of an ongoing investigation into the matter.

Mohammad told newsmen that the teenager would be taken to the hospital for a comprehensive medical check-up to ascertain that the pastor has not infected her with HIV or any other sexually
transmitted diseases.

He cautioned members of the public to beware of people, who might want to deceive and take undue advantage of them.

Villagers Brutally Cut Off Man's Penis For Raping A Student

Angry villagers have descended heavily and badly on a man who was caught after he allegedly raped a form 2 student.

A rapist was meted with severe punishment in Munyu village, Kieni, Nyeri County of Kenya when angry members of the public cut off the man's private part after he allegedly raped a form two female student.

Not only that, the man was seriously beaten and left with bruises all over his face and could hardly walk due to the extent of injuries on his private parts.

It was gathered that the suspect worked as a farmhand in the homestead in which the girl used to pass through while heading to school every day and he has been observing her before the incident.

On the day of the incident, he allegedly ambushed the school girl at around 6.00 am, dragged her into his house, and raped her before letting her off with KES 200 note that he allegedly threw at her.

The mother to the rape victim called for justice, saying this could affect her child in many ways, including her studies. The mother was speaking from Warazo health Centre where the girl was rushed for treatment, News24 reports.

Police had to heavily guard the suspect when ferrying him from Munyu Patrol base to Warazo health centre where he was also taken for treatment as residents were calling for his head.

Gunmen kidnap Taraba Deputy Gov’s mother, demand N300m ransom

The Taraba Police Command has on Tuesday confirmed the abduction of Hajiya Hauwa-Belli Manu, the mother of the deputy governor of the state, Haruna Manu.

Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Mr. Joseph kwaji,  said reports from the Mutum-Biyu headquarters of Gassol Local Goverment Area of the state, indicated that the elderly woman was taken away by gunmen from the family home of the deputy governor at about 9pm on Monday.

Kwaji said the whereabouts of the woman was not yet known because the abductors were yet to communicate with anybody.

He said the command had deployed additional detectives in the area to assist in tracking the culprits.

Kwaji therefore called on members of the public with useful information to contact the nearest police station and present same.

‘Dead’ Chinese baby awakes just before cremation

A Chinese baby boy who was declared dead and spent the night in a morgue showed signs of life just as he was about to be cremated, local TV reported.

Workers at the crematorium in Pan'an in the eastern province of Zhejiang were preparing to cremate the baby on Friday when he suddenly starting moaning, provincial television reported.

The boy had been declared dead the day before and had spent 15 hours in the morgue at a temperature of about -12 degrees Celsius (10.4 F).

After finding the child alive, the crematorium notified his father and the baby was taken to a hospital intensive care unit.

"It's the first time I've seen this. It's a true miracle," said a doctor at the Pan'an hospital where the infant was born prematurely in January.

The child spent 23 days in an incubator and was then taken home by his father, who wanted him there for the start of the Lunar New Year which began on Monday.

But the baby's condition worsened a few days after returning home. He was declared dead on February 4 after a doctor decided his heart had stopped beating.

Before the baby was sent to the morgue, his father had wrapped him in two layers of clothing and a thick bag which may have saved his life.

However, doctors are cautious about his chances of recovery.

Veteran Nollywood actor Olumide Bakare is between life and death at the UCH hospital on Secretariat road near total garden in Ibadan Oyo State.

As at today, the actor who is now bedridden has accrued huge medical bills as his condition worsens on a daily basis.

He has been placed on life support due to malfunctioning heart and lungs.
As at the time of this report, Mr Bakare needs 30,000 daily for treatment.

Olumide Bakare was rushed to UCH last week and since then, the actor said he has spent over N200,000.

They said some of the Cava sessions included girls who spiced up the sex performances with their own styles.

ABUJA-President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday said that Boko Haram sect was embarrassing his government with their renewed onslaught against the people of the north-east.
Speaking against the backdrop of plethora of suicide bombings in Chibok market, Dolari Internally Displaced Person’s (IDP) camp in Borno State and the Gombi market in Adamawa State in the passing week, president Buhari said that the insurgents had become more desperate, saying that the recent bombings were attempts to gain public sympathy and attention having suffered terribly in the hands of Nigerian military.
President Buhari said the terrorists had been rendered weak, confused and homeless after repeated bombings and ravaging of their camps and hide outs by the military, forcing them to find their way back into the society to wreak havoc, like the case of the Dolari IDP.
The President also noted that the materials for the Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were locally sourced by the insurgents.
He therefore urged Nigerians especially residents of the north-east region to be more vigilant and circumspect.
“Having lost the war, they are seeking ways and means to gradually find their way back into society. They are not returning to contribute but to cause more havoc. They are so desperate to embarrass the government and the people that they have no qualms attacking isolated communities and markets.
“I urge all citizens wherever they live to own the war against terror and to be part of the fight because it is the only way we can finish the remaining work that needs to be done to make our country safe again,” the President said.

And now E! The official Kardashian network have confirmed the dating rumours. The network claims a source ( more than likely one of the Kardashians) informed them they feel Chyna is preying on Rob. A source tells them that there is “concern” surrounding the pairing because the insider feels that she is “preying” on Rob “during a weak time.” The source is also concerned that she is only using him to get back at Kylie Jenner. Kylie and the model have been rumored to be feuding for a long time, given Chyna’s previous relationship with rapper Tyga. She and Tyga share one child together.

How do you feel being a recipient of the Headies award?
It shows that God answers prayers and He proved that He was right when He said that we shall always be the head and not the tail. God’s word is beginning to manifest in my life. I feel greatly honoured because I was placed in a category that had other industry heavyweights and musicians that I revere.
It is a great privilege and accomplishment to win the Headies and it means that I am on a path to greatness like my boss, Don Jazzy.

Honestly I did not think I would win because my song, Godwin, was put against some of my favourite songs of 2015 but then again, I expected God to win in the situation. I did not plan for it and I was short of words when I was called on the stage.
I did not even get to appreciate all the people I wanted to acknowledge. It was when I got off stage that I began to remember some names I should have acknowledged. I appreciate everyone who has been and would be blessed by my songs.

You were also in the category for the contentious Next Rated category that sprang up some controversy. What is your opinion on the drama that happened over that award?
The next rated category is one that is highly rated among singers and being nominated alone is a big deal to me because past winners have done very well for themselves after the awards. However, winning does not guarantee your success or showmanship as a musician.
Firstly, I am grateful to the organisers of the award for nominating me and I I’m extremely happy.
Regarding the controversy, Reekado Banks had a good year in 2015 and he is a hard worker. He deserves everything he gets. Kiss Daniel also did very well last year; he had three hit songs last year and some of the songs are my favourite.
Lil Kesh, my brother, also had back to back hits last year. It should be a big deal for anyone who was nominated, but it is only one person that would take home the prize. It is a voting category and I guess the fans chose their favourite.

Do you think the whole rancor that sprang up as a result of that award was necessary?
Certain situations spark up spontaneous reactions. I am sure the parties involved in the controversy would be remorseful after the event because nobody wants to be associated with something negative.
It was a spur of the moment reaction because we are humans and we have blood running through our veins. We have opinions to express; it is just the way that we pass our opinion that matters.
People have a right to be angry and they have a right to express their opinion. They have a right to defend themselves, their friends, and their songs. I think everybody just wants to be better and they want what is best for their team. That is all I can say.

How come you did not tweet about the incident like some of your label mates?
I am studying Mass Communication at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism. I know better than to speak while a controversy is at its peak.
It is better to just keep quiet and let everything play out. I actually tweeted before the event where I wrote that, ‘tonight we celebrate together’, and we actually celebrated together. The best thing to do in moments like that is just to remain at the background and not react to criticism immediately.

What is your reaction to Etcetera’s negative article about your song with Asa?
I don’t think the article was objective. I read the article and Etcetera is a freelance writer who does not speak the opinion of the people. He says what he feels.
I have read some of his past articles and they are the same, he says what he thinks and feels is right and I feel everyone has a right to their opinion. Etcetera, being a musician, might feel that there are some certain elements missing in a song, but I see tweets from fans, I hear my song being played across radio stations in Africa and people tell me that they love the song and feel blessed by it.
That is all that matters to me. I am not doing music for it to be anaylsed, I am doing music for people to feel blessed and inspired to do great things. I do music for my message to impact on people’s lives and not for people to say that I did not sing a particular note properly or spell a word right.
That is not my goal. My goal is to make people happy and as long as people are being blessed by my songs, that is all that matters.

Do you think you can do a song that would be as impactful as Godwin again?
Godwin is a very powerful song but I want to assure my fans that we have recorded some very fantastic songs. We even had song that were ‘Godwin worthy’ before we recorded Godwin.
But you can’t deny the fact that there are some elements in Godwin that cuts across all demography. Everyone can relate to the song and you don’t get those kinds of songs easily. Even if you do a song that is better than it, just because some segments of people cannot relate to it, they might feel it is not like Godwin. Godwin was divinely inspired and it was a God project and I pray God blesses my other projects too.

You tried inventing a dance step for Godwin which many people believe was a flop. Do you agree with them?
It was not a flop and to set the record straight, I did not invent the dance step. I saw a little boy do the dance step on Youtube so I incorporated the dance step.
I felt it was a funny dance step and a hilarious way to express oneself.
I also wanted people to talk because it took us a while to release the video. It was a risk that we took because people already had in their mind what they wanted the video to look like.
I needed them to talk about something and take their minds away from the fact that we released the video late. I did not invent the dance and I would love to meet the kid someday.
I found the memes on the internet hilarious and that meant that more people went to watch the video online. People actually do the dance step especially when I am performing the song. They can relate with it.

How have you been able to cope with schooling?
I know that education is priority and it takes you pass where your talent places you. Education is priority for me and I am making sure that I do my best to come out with good grades. I also want to use my life as an example and inspiration for some other people out there.
No matter what your talent is, it is never enough. You need education because the spotlight is only there for a while. It would not be on you forever, not because you are not talented enough but because someone new has to come on board. When times like that come, you fall back to your education.

What inspired your jerry curls hairdo that is fast becoming your trademark?
It has been a while that I have been keeping this jerry curls. The only difference is that now that I am more successful, the hair is curlier. I love Michael Jackson and I decided to imbibe some of his style. I also did the hair to make me different and unique.
I want to stand out from the crowd and also make people talk about me. I am sure when people hear jerry curls, the first name that comes to mind is Korede Bello.
The 80s inspired this look, during Michael Jackson’s era. A lot of people had this hairdo during that time. It is a classic and vintage look. Michael Jackson’s own was longer than mine.

You look buffed, how often do you go to the gym?
When the money comes, some physical attributes start to change. I have expansive muscles but I actually do not go to the gym. I just noticed that my body has become more buff but I think it is because of my work.
I do a lot of dance rehearsals and by so doing, my muscles get to flex up more. But I do not go to the gym. I just do the basic exercises but dancing alone is enough exercise for me.

When you started your career you were always putting on beads but it seems you have stopped…
I am an African prince and I still wear beads but not as much as I used to except I am trying to pull off a particular look. I am also a Woodin ambassador so most of the time, I wear their fabric and beads go with African fabrics.

What would you never be caught wearing?
I don’t know. I don’t think there is anything I can’t wear. If anything that people don’t like, I probably put it on so that people would talk about it.
There is nothing that my consciousness would not permit me to wear except it is socially unaccepted or it is immoral. I also don’t like to look older than my age whenever I dress, I aspire to look simple and elegant.

What is your fashion fetish?
I am not a very tall person so I like to wear outfits that make me look taller than I am. I don’t wear fez caps and snapbacks again because I have to show my jerry curl but sometimes I feel my dressing is not complete without them.

Was there ever a time in your life you prayed to be taller?
Definitely, when I was in school, there was this girl that I liked a lot but she was taller than me so I used to disturb God a lot to make me taller.
But I grew up and realised that there is more to life than being tall. I mean some of the greatest people on earth are short people and height has nothing to do with love. If someone truly loves you, your physical attributes won’t matter.
Even people that are physically challenged get married. You realise that life is about purpose. You are created the way you are for a purpose and to fulfill someone’s needs and to be a blessing to others. God did not make a mistake creating you the way you are.

What item can’t you leave home without?
That would be my watch and my ring.

What is your most expensive fashion item?
I do not know because I do not check price tags anymore but I think it would be my shoes because I like shoes and I shop for them a lot.

Are you in a relationship?
I get this question a lot on twitter and the truth is that I am single although I have a few crushes. I am very much single and available.

Is it that you haven’t found a girl you like?
It is not about finding a girl that I like but more of priority for me. I feel it is still too early for a relationship and I might get distracted because I am a romantic person and I give all I have to my relationship. Right now, I have a lot on my mind, I have music and I have school, so I am trying to balance that.

Did you ever date DJ Cuppy?
Cuppy is my friend and I love her. There was one that I was with Zahra Buhari as well and people began to speculate. They are my people and that is it.

Outrage As primary Four Girl aged 8 is Married in Zaria

Although millions of eight-year-old girls in Nigeria are presently playing or disturbing their mothers for more noodles, there is one particular eight-year-old girl who is now a married woman.

It has been confirmed that two days ago, a marriage ceremony was conducted between a rather curious couple: the bride is eight years of age and she is in primary four (we are presently still getting more information on the groom but initial reports say he is aged 14 and is in SS1).

They are of the Baba Ahmed family in Zaria and this is reportedly not the first of such marriages they have conducted. Sources told Abiyamo that although the marriage has indeed been formalized between the two ‘lovers’, there will be no sexual intercourse until at least they finish their secondary school education.

It is unclear if there will be other marital duties such as cooking, living together or going for romantic time outings.  We are still getting more updates on the story and will be updating as we get them. The marriage has raised a lot of controversy among Nigerians. Some are totally outraged at the concept of wedding between minors and even say it is unconstitutional as the ‘bride’ is not of age and she did not give her consent while others say there is nothing wrong with it.

Lassa fever is an acute viral illness that occurs in West Africa. The illness was discovered in 1969 when two missionary nurses died in Nigeria, West Africa. The cause of the illness was found to be Lassa virus, named after the town in Nigeria where the first cases originated. The virus, a member of the virus family Arenaviridae, is a single stranded RNA virus and is zoonotic or animal borne.

In areas of Africa where the disease is endemic (that is, constantly present), Lassa fever is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. While Lassa fever is mild or has no observable symptoms in about 80% of people infected with the virus, the remaining 20% have a severe multisystem disease. Lassa fever is also associated with occasional epidemics, during which the case fatality rate can reach 50%

Important facts about Lassa fever include:

1. Definition: Lassa fever is an acute viral disease caused by the Lassa virus which belongs to the arenavirus virus family.

2. Origin: It was first discovered in Nigeria in 1969 after the unexpected death of two missionary nurses.

3. Location: The disease is primarily predominant in West Africa – Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.

4. Animal host: The multimammate rodent species is the only known carrier of the virus, and it is mostly found in West Africa.

5. Number of deaths: Approximately 5,000 deaths have occurred in the region because of the disease with approximately 100,000 to 300,000 infections.

9. Prevention: Homes should be thoroughly fumigated and food items covered to prevent contamination. Eating of rodent meat (as bush meat) should also be prohibited.
